école M is committed to sustainable development

Joséphine Vigouroux

Environmental issues are now at the heart of global concerns. Aware of our role as a transmitter, we atécole Mwish to raise awareness and enable children to become involved in an eco-citizen approach from an early age. This year, the school is making a long-term commitment to sustainable development by joining the Eco-Ecole programme.

On the way to obtaining the Eco-School label

  • What is the eco-school project?

At école M, raising our students' awareness of sustainable development, ecology, environmental preservation, recycling and ecogestures is a priority, so that from an early age they become aware of their impact on the planet and become eco-citizens. We have decided to frame our environmental approach by joining the Eco école program, an international program for education in sustainable development (ESD), supported by the French Ministry of Education.

From October 2019, with the help of parents, we are committed to becoming a clean and responsible school.

Our aim is to make a solid and lasting commitment to sustainable development on the part of everyone involved in our nursery school: children and teachers, management, staff and parents, as well as all our partners. Together, we want to play an active role in the ecological transition and pass on sustainable ecological values to our pupils. Awarded by the Teragir association, the Eco-Ecole label seems to us to be the most appropriate approach for meeting the 17 sustainable development goals set by the UN as part of theAgenda 2030.

  • Our school project for the 2019-20 school year: waste

As part of our sustainable approach, this year we have collectively chosen the theme of waste.

After a diagnosis of the state of our school in the 19th arrondissement with volunteer parents and the teaching team, the steering committee met three times to set up and monitor an action plan to improve the ecological footprint of école M and its community.

Since January 2020, we have :

  • Purchased sorting bins and implemented waste sorting rules including recycling of organic waste in the classrooms and kitchen area of the school.
  • Trained our team in ecology and sustainable development.
  • Carried out educational sequences on the theme of waste with children.

As soon as the containment is over, we will organise two events around the theme of waste. The first event will take place on Friday 5 June 2020: the whole school community will be invited to collect waste with the children on the Allée Darius Milhaud.

Later in the year, as we do every year, we plan to organise a picnic before the summer holidays. This year we have decided to challenge families to bring a zero waste meal with them, i.e. without any disposable packaging.

These days will be organised by the teaching staff in close collaboration with the children and their families.
